Calm is often misunderstood.

It is sometimes mistaken for passivity, or a lack of urgency, or an absence of drive. In high-performing environments, this can lead to an unspoken assumption that calmness is somehow at odds with ambition.

In reality, the opposite is often true.

Calm, in a leadership context, is not the removal of intensity. It is the ability to hold intensity without becoming overwhelmed by it. It is a form of stability that allows others to function at their best.

When a leader is calm, the team begins to settle. Not because everything is easy, but because the environment feels workable. There is less noise in the system. Less second guessing. Less energy spent on managing perceived threat.

This matters more than we might think.

Psychological safety is now widely recognised as a key factor in team performance. Yet safety is not created through policy alone. It is transmitted through behaviour, moment by moment. Through how a leader listens, how they respond to mistakes, how they handle pressure.

A calm leader signals something important. It is safe to think here.

When people feel safe enough, they contribute more fully. They ask better questions. They admit uncertainty earlier. They take responsibility without excessive fear of blame. The overall intelligence of the group increases.

Trust grows in this kind of environment. Not as an abstract concept, but as a felt experience. People begin to rely on one another more naturally. Collaboration becomes less effortful.

Performance follows.

This does not mean that calm leaders avoid difficult conversations. Quite the opposite. They are often more direct, because they are not driven by reactivity. Feedback is given clearly, without unnecessary emotional charge. Expectations are set and upheld.

There is a quiet authority in this.

It is worth noting that calm is not constant. No leader is regulated all the time. The difference lies in recovery. How quickly do you return to centre after being disrupted? How aware are you of your own state in the moment?

Teams do not need perfection. They need consistency and repair.

If a leader loses their steadiness and then acknowledges it, recalibrates, and reconnects, this in itself builds trust. It models something human and usable. It shows that regulation is a practice, not a fixed trait.

Over time, the effect compounds. A calm leader creates a calmer team. A calmer team thinks more clearly, relates more effectively, and performs more sustainably.

The question is not whether calm matters. It is whether we are willing to cultivate it deliberately.

Because in the end, calm is not a personality type. It is a skill. And like any skill, it can be strengthened with attention and practice.

“Your emotions make you human. Even the unpleasant ones have a purpose. Don’t lock them away. If you ignore them, they just get louder and angrier.” – Sabaa Tahir, ‘A Torch Against the Night’

Emotions are present and vitally important. They help us to decode our values, to motivate us and to release tension. Every emotion has a use, a reason and a purpose.

We are often able to attribute our emotions to their cause; we usually know exactly why we are happy, sad, elated, angry, excited or depressed. However, even the most reflective of us will recognise that sometimes our emotions are a mystery. You may sometimes find yourself to be over sensitive, hyper emotional or feeling like anger or sadness is bubbling inside you without being able to fully explain it. These emotional states are often not a reaction to a specific event, but rather are down an underlying source which might not be completely obvious.

Emotions are healthy, it is when they are not acknowledged or understood that they can become problematic. It is imperative to wellbeing and general mental health to be mindful of why we feel the way we feel, and how to address their causes.

Here are some of the reasons you might be feeling emotional, and what to do about them…

1. Stress

Let’s start off with an obvious one! We all know that stress can make us emotional and short-tempered. However, sometimes, and I have certainly found this, we are too busy thundering through our busy lives without taking a breath that we don’t even notice that we have too much on our plate. If you are feeling overloaded, perhaps it is time to take a look at you schedule. Are there some tasks or responsibilities that you can offload? Can you put aside some time to unwind? Even half an hour a day to be quiet, read a book or have a bath can make all the difference to your stress levels.

2. Tiredness

Lack of sleep can have a huge impact on your emotions. Getting a good night’s sleep can dramatically change your mood, as well as your energy, resilience and productivity. Lack of sleep can be down to a number of things; too much on your mind, an irregular bedtime routine or too much screen time. For thoughts on how to get a great night’s sleep, check out our post from a couple of weeks ago: How to Get a Great Night’s Sleep

3. Lack of Activity

Exercise and activity has been proven to be an excellent emotional regulator. Not only does activity make you feel better about yourself, it also releases endorphins and gives you some quality time to let your mind wander, to get your head clear. Exercise needn’t be heavy, even just a daily stroll can have a huge positive impact.

4. Supressed Feelings

There is still a lot of stigma around showing emotion. Being mindful and open with our feelings is not always celebrated, and is still unacceptable among many communities. Burying emotions is a really good way to fill your body with tension, stress, anger and sadness. Getting in touch with your emotions is healthy. Digging deep and facing these emotions, and their causes, may not always be easy, but it is hugely beneficial for your happiness and mental health in the long run.

Take some time. Look inside yourself. Talk to someone. Unpack. Is there anything inside you that needs addressing? Do the work here. It may be the difference between the positive, functional and productive ‘You’, and the downtrodden and permanently emotionally damaged ‘You’.

5. Big Changes

Has something big happened in your life recently? If it has, have you acknowledged it and its size? Big changes such as moving house, changing jobs, losing a loved one or having a baby are some examples of these. I know that, in the past, I have had big things going on in my life and shrugged them off as if they are no big deal. Big changes deserve to be given weight and focus. Shrugging them off for some sense of pride or for the optics of seeming like ‘you got this’ can be damaging. It is OK to have a lot going on. Acknowledge the big things going on in your life.

6. Grief

Grief itself constitutes a huge change. The odd thing with grief, especially if it is a new emotion for you, is that everybody reacts differently to it; you may not be feeling the way you think you are supposed to feel. Grief, I have found, is better shared than hidden. It is something that never really leaves you, more something that you have to learn to deal with. Again, you have to give grief time out in the open and attribute appropriate gravity to it; it cannot be hidden or quickly willed away. Be as open with it as you can.

7. Diet

Emotions and food have a special connection. Food can make you feel happy. It can comfort you. Food helps us to celebrate and to show love. However, an imbalanced diet can also play havoc with the chemicals inside our bodies. Mental health can be severely effected by poor dietary choices. So, if you are feeling down and don’t know why, why not take a step back and have a look at how you are eating.

There are few of us who would deny that we could be more skilled at managing our emotions but what are the practical steps of being with our emotions mindfully?

Here are five simple stages that you can work through when you are feeling challenged by an emotional state that would normally throw you off your game.  Work through these stages in your own silent meditation. Simply close your eyes and contemplate each step in turn.

1. Accept

Accept that your emotional state is calling for your attention. The longer you resist the call, the more challenging the emotion can become. When we accept our emotions they get their hearing and continue their journey. Think of emotions as the weather of your consciousness.

When sadness visits, if it meets no resistance, it will flow straight through allowing the next emotional front to move in. Like the weather, emotion doesn’t always make sense and isn’t  always convenient. The only thing you can do is to be with what is.

2. Feel

Welcome the experiential feeling of the emotion into your mind, body and consciousness. Even if it is only for a moment, and if your circumstances allow, let the emotion to have its way with you. Get curious and discover what this emotion is all about. Really feel it.

3. Express

Really feeling our emotions often leads to spontaneous expression, a wail, some tears, a smile, laughter or sigh. Give yourself some privacy and move the emotion into expression. Use your body, your voice. Do not worry if the expression is neither pretty or cool. If you have a creative practice, take lingering emotions into your artwork, music or journal. If you don’t – do a doodle.

4. Be Courageous

Some emotions feel too big and too painful to experience. At this point you need to tap into your courage. You have been through many challenges in life. You will also get through this one. Have faith in yourself.

5. Listen

Emotions bring wisdom. What is the lesson of this emotional state? Are you being called into a different decision? Are you feeling the outcome of a choice you made previously. Is there some aspect of your life you need to take better care of? However, resist the urge to predict and make meaning out of every emotion. Some emotions are simply passing through.
